The main reason I chose to come to Polytechnic in 9th grade was because
of the endless list of opportunities the Poly offers, which you cannot find at
other schools. From sports such as fencing to the insane Outdoor-Ed trips to
Havasupai, Poly offers it all, an aspect of the school that has helped me grow,
step out of my comfort zone and try new things. My favorite program at Poly
is GIP. Coming to Poly on tours as an applicant, I was in astonished to hear of
such a program with such amazing opportunities and trips, from Barcelona to
Iceland. I knew that if I was accepted, I would definitely be a part of GIP.
Here I am, three years later, a junior at Poly who has been on a month-long
GIP trip to France and expanded my cultural and global knowledge through
countless GIP events.

Growing up, I have been lucky enough to travel to many countries around the
world. Exposing myself to new cultures, climates, geographies, and people from
a young age has been a large part of shaping the person I am today. But being a
part of the GIP program has taken my knowledge and learning of the world to a
whole new level. What I love about this program is that, for example, a trip to
France is not just prancing around Paris in a beret taking Instagram photos. GIP
turns a trip into a cultural exchange between students of two different countries,
which is one of the most important aspects for me. Not only did I see the food, music,
and language of French people during my GIP trip, but was immersed in it, and lived
the authentic life of of a French person. I learned how to be abroad without my
family, interact with new people, be responsible, and adapt to a new culture.

The program doesn’t just take you to around the globe but brings it to you.
GIP Events have not only taught me facts about the world we live in but how
I can take the steps to make our world a better place. Speakers such as Mr. Ryke
brought a different take on global perspectives, teaching us about climate change
and how our generation can make a difference in our planet’s health.
Without a program like GIP, not only my global perspectives, but that of Poly
as a whole would not be as profound, and we would not address the global topics
that GIP starts conversations about.

If selected to be a Global Scholar, I would not only deepen my global perspectives
but spread these international ideas to those around me in the Poly community.
I remember being a little freshman and having a senior come into my World Cultures
class to teach us, and just thinking of how excited I was to be a senior so I could be a
Global Scholar. I would explore my interests in Indian culture and spread my knowledge
and ideas to others. As mentioned in my application, during a trip to India I got to meet
kids from a school called VidayGyan, and set up a pen pal exchange program between
the students there and Poly India World Cultures students! I would love to continue
this type of work for Poly students with the GIP Global Scholars Program. I plan to
spend most of the summer this year in India and hope to create more connections
with schools and foundations such as VidyaGyan to bring back to Pasadena. I would
truly love to be a part of this life-changing program for lovers of the world like me.
